Please discuss your thoughts regarding the transition in Baldwin County to the Digital Renaissance (1 to 1 Computer Initiative). Do you feel it will benefit your student performance?
I am excited, anxious, and a bit overwhelmed about the transition to the digital renaissance. I simply wish that we (teachers) would have received our computers sooner so that we would have the opportunity to actually utilize them in our current classrooms. Looks like that is not going to happen and it will be up to the teachers willing to devote time this summer to become better prepared for the transition. I look forward to the positive changes that this transition will bring however I expect that it will take several years for everyone to become comfortable enough to jump fully on board (parents, students and teacher alike).
I agree that the digital renaissance is a positive move into the future and will be a wonderful assest for our students to access the world with a touch of a button. I also feel that training for the teachers would be a wonderful luxury that might not happen. It is possible that it will be a 'learn as you go' type of experience. At least most teachers are familiar with computers or at least should be at this point.
I have tried numerous methods of teaching to get students interested and motivated to learn. I find that what works for some does not work for others. I believe the Digital Renaissance movement will be beneficial to those students who have the desire to learn and want to excel in their academics. The students who lack the desire will use the computers for activities that they were not intended. It would be nice to have training on the new computers prior to starting the new year. Since the computers we currently have are PC's and we will be getting Mac's training should be placed higher on the priority list than it is.
I too am feeling a bit overwhelmed since we have yet to receive our laptops and not sure when training will be. I hope this new experience will be a good one since so many students don't have access to computers outside of school. Hopefully they will learn the proper way to research information and will excel in the process. Since so many college courses are offered online maybe the students in Baldwin County will get a jump start on learning the process.
This is a great initiative. It going to require some of our educators to come out of their comfort zones a little but ultimately their will be vast improvements. The engagement that we teachers will from our students will be remarkable. There is no better assessment than self assessment, and that is one major thing that this initiative will allow students to do. I believe that we are all in for huge changes, but better then that great results.
I am very nervous about the change. I want the students to learn and apply what I teach. I am afraid some teachers are not prepared for the transition and will have a huge learning curve to overcome. Change is good but with adequate training.
